Installation by Kurt Reinartz Salgado
29. November – 1. December 2024
Pores in the Sand is a multimedia installation that delves into ecological imbrications and porosity through the lens of Habermannsee (Kaulsdorfer Seen), a unique and cherished natural site in Berlin, Germany. This installation proposes to explore the lake’s landscape, its diverse queer histories, and the fluid boundaries between human experience and the environment’s. It is meant to invite the spectator to reflect on how humans relate to the spaces we inhabit, urging recognition of the shifting and interconnected nature of our relationships with the environment and each other. The installation features a soundscape composition assembled from field recordings of the lake and its surrounding forests and clearings, capturing acoustic scenes of its waters, soils, winds, and living entities. The sound will move in flux, reflecting the porous and shape-shifting boundaries between nature and human presence, and between public and private space. Accompanying the soundscape is a single-channel video projection depicting the lake and its surroundings in the Summer months. The footage captures moments of stillness and activity, from the shimmering surface of the water under the sunlight to the paths shrouded in its thickets. This visual approach mirrors the point of view of the artist and considers the site’s porosity, emphasising how spaces like Habermannsee absorb and reflect a diversity of identities, histories and emotions of those who visit them. These sonic and visual scenes are interwoven with stories and fragments of testimonials in the form of text that recount the lived experiences of queer individuals who have found solace and their own types of connection at Habermannsee.
Kurt Reinartz Salgado is a Mexican/German artist who has constantly found himself at cultural and social peripheries. This interpolation has seen him develop a special sensitivity and curiosity for others. In his odd ways and primarily through the medium of sound, Kurt explores how people perceive reality, memories and myths, as well as the affective relationships we hold for beings, spaces, history and things. He’s released various musical works under the Reinartz alias on different experimental and DIY labels, has now begun to embark in the sound installation and sculpture formats and is currently coursing the Sound Studies and Sonic Arts Master’s at the UdK in Berlin.
