Participation AI is an interactive audiovisual AI installation that references Paik Nam June’s Participation TV.

When television emerged as a one-way, hierarchical mass medium and economic infrastructure, Paik demonstrated that viewers did not have to remain passive recipients of meaning produced by capital-intensive, centrally controlled broadcast systems. By hacking into television itself and parasitically intervening in its informational power structures, he revealed that individuals could actively reshape the medium—turning spectatorship into participation and technology into a site of creative agency.

Participation AI extends this logic into the contemporary age of artificial intelligence. As AI increasingly functions as a cognitive and economic infrastructure, it generates a dual anxiety: the centralization of decision-making power within opaque, capital-driven systems, and the potential redundancy of human intelligence, creativity, and judgment. Rather than accepting these conditions, the work proposes a participatory relationship—one in which anyone can intervene in AI processes, expose their contingencies, and co-shape how intelligence operates culturally and aesthetically, framing AI as a medium that can be engaged, questioned, and reconfigured.
